The violin, despite its Colonial history, has become an integral part of Carnatic music and the music season in the city. But in both North and South India, the ability to repair and restore this instrument is nearly non-existent. The Lalgudi Trust is pleased to announce a unique and revolutionary program this Marghazi season - a 21-day workshop led by USA-based James Wimmer, which will teach musicians, craftsmen and enthusiasts the art of repairing/restoring a violin.

'When I have a problem with my instruments, repairs usually have to wait to wait till I go abroad because I'm always nervous about getting my violins fixed here,' Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan explains. The Lalgudi Trust hopes to change the way this classic and beautiful instrument is viewed in the country, by securing the services of James Wimmer, one of the world's foremost violin makers.

James Wimmer is a professional violin-maker with over 20 years of experience. He trained in Germany under master violin makers Wolfgang Uebel and Herbert Rainer Knobel and brings this old world tradition of classical violin construction to bear in his concert quality instruments today.

Established by the late Lalgudi Jayaraman, the Lalgudi Trust works to keep the art and tradition of the violin alive for posterity. It focuses on youth-driven initiatives and sponsors concerts and distributes prizes to deserving youngsters and carries forward its founder's belief – that the knowledge of how to care for and maintain a violin is as important as playing it.

When: 21-day workshop (from 9:30am to 5pm) concludes November 28th.
Where: New No. 29, Ramanujam Street, T. Nagar, Chennai 600017
